back to top BEST STARTS FOR KIDS Things To Do With Kids While Self-Isolating At Home During a Pandemic... What works while self isolating with kids? By keeping your kids engaged and happy you'll all be happier. Set up a routine with a variety of activity types: active v passive, exciting v relaxing, etc Discuss new expectations ahead of time Set up a reward system linking privileges to cooperation by noticing good behaviour Listed below are some activities you could try. You'll be amazed at how much of an educational layer you can add to things you may already be doing. Many of these activities are open ended so cater well to varied age groups. These activities are pitched for 3-13 year olds. The links with an asterisk have been activated and show language, maths, knowledge & social skills, that can developed through these activities. *Animal Fur Inspired Painting animal fur inspired painting *Experimenting With Dot Painting dot painting Creating a God's Eye Weaving gods eye weaving *How Many Squares In Our Room squares in a house *Finding Everything Inside A Hoop Finding everything inside a hoop thrown on the ground *Having a We Can Be Heroes Day we can be heroes Shadow Tracing With Chalk Feeling: Guess What's Inside Bag Mystery bag *Making A 'Love You Paper Chain' Making an I Love You Paper Chain Creating a Hand Washing Song Learning How To Play Marbles Playing Musical Chairs playing musical chairs Playing I'm Thinking Of An Animal *Keep Supplying Opposites Challenge opposites Post It Notes on Everything Red Listing: I'm Looking Forward To Playing I Spy with My Little Eye Sorting: Using Spoons or Tweezers sorting Self isolating at home can be a relationship building time with your kids, if you're smart about it and set things up to work well. By keeping your kids busy, motivated and happy you'll all be happier. (And if you think I don't know what it's like to be you going through this, I've spent weeks, indoors with 25 preschoolers, during periods of inclement weather. And weeks camping in wet weather with kids. Sometimes our numbers swelled to 55 children when buddies joined us. We had fun, we learnt a lot... And it made our relationship stronger, not weaker.) 2. Discuss expectations and responsibilities. Go to link: Setting up Routines to assist you Explain that all of you have responsibilities you have to attend to. Make up a simple routine chart with visuals (and display it) so children know what's expected at any given time Children could draw the visuals for it or you could prepare it together on the computer Afternoon privileges/games/free time are linked to being cooperative during morning activities 3. Set up a reward system. For being cooperative in the morning, there are afternoon privileges. For more information go to: Why Spend Positive Time Together This could be choosing a privilege evening meal or dessert bedtime stories afternoon games free time activity for the day family board games t.v. programmes movie choice dance music You can have children take turns or choose the activity they're responsible for. And have this linked to their privileges. For example: cleaning up after activities setting the table unstacking the dishwasher keeping their rooms tidy And be careful what you notice. If you're noticing the child who is being difficult you're likely to get difficult behaviour from the others. Kids notice what gets attention. If you make it positive wherever possible, you're likely setting yourself up for success. What worked was, designing a simple routine so kids knew what was going to happen at certain times of the day (although I allowed flexibility if longer times were needed to complete activities.) And I made the mornings more structured and the afternoons less so. Depending on the age and maturity of the kids involved they could be involved in designing their daily routine as long as all areas are covered. MIX IT UP Very active activities versus passive activities, engaged learning versus relaxation, creativity versus structured activity, mundane versus excitment Plan for down time 1. Set up a routine... The key to success is variety. A daily routine for children aged 3-10 years could include some of the following. exercise (Your kids can do a daily work out with you) hygiene food prep (breakfast) structured learning time school healthy snack outside time or dance time (you can join in) food prep time (lunch) reading refer my favourite books creativity time learning games time completing responsibilities time outside time/ dance time or free play time passive time (free play time) bath and bed REMEMBER: Kids will usually choose positive time with you over most other things. If you acknowledge and appreciate cooperative behaviour you're much more likely to get more of it... Seriously. Being in a lock down situation with challenging children could become more difficult than it needs to be, particularly if you make the mistake of noticing bad behaviour. • Help: Finding Money During a Crisis | Best Parenting Advice, simple money saving

back to top PARENT SELF-CARE Help: Finding Money During a Crisis If you're experiencing financial difficulties beyond being redeployed or accessing financial assistance from Centrelink, you may benefit from reducing your costs. Simple Tips That Can Make the Biggest Differences During Crisis Times Work out exactly what your financial situation is. And work out how you can live on your reduced income or welfare payments. You may have a financial cushion: e.g. severance pay, leave entitlements or savings you can access. Try to spin any monies out as far as possible. You may have accrued loyalty points or credit points. Now could be a great time to use them. You could cancel any non-essential subscriptions and club memberships for a time Some utilities offer price reductions if you pay your bills by the due date. If you can't afford to pay your bills you could approach one of the many charities for a cash payment, otherwise ask to pay it off over time You may be able to access advice from one of the financial counselors available through many major charities. They're used to advising people who's finances are meager Eating at home is a great way of saving money. Check out the money saving tips We are living in extraordinary times at the moment. If others offer assistance, take it. Sometimes relatives or friends may feel it's a privilege to assist you, because they love you. And one day, when you're back on your feet you can repay it, or pay it forward to another. An elderly aunt gave us $500 when we were going through a major crisis. And as our situation improved we gave that same gift, repeatedly to others, to help them through. You too can get through this. When I was in a real crisis situation I didn't go to a shopping centre (or onto any online shopping site for six months.) What I didn't see I didn't miss buying. I paid off credit cards as they fell due. Many have interest rates around 20+% Renegotiating your housing loan so you're paying less interest could assist. If you're unable to make loan repayments you could see if your bank will let you use any excess payments you've already made to cover your loan. They are likely to have other offers that also may suit you. But read the fine print. Money Saving Tips During a Pandemic Share this page with a friend DISCLAIMER: N.B. • Childrens Routines | Best Parenting Advice: by award winning educator

Back to Top SELF CARE FOR PARENTS Children's Routines I didn't support our children having more than one major out of school activity at a time, each. Because it impacted on family time we used to build positive relationships. If the only people your kids are having fun with are outside the house, are your kids more likely to want to spend time at home or not? For example gymnastics was three afternoons a week at one stage. It was when it was required to attend two morning before school and Saturdays as well as the three afternoons a week I decided it was too much of a family commitment to continue, especially as my eldest son was going into a Selective High School where there was a lot of additional homework too. Children generally benefit from the predictability and structure routines offer Routines provide the organization to support children's health, schooling and their interests Limiting afternoon activities to one major commitment per child allows families to run more smoothly: e.g healthy meals, homework, time to maintain positve relationships Routines support child independence, positive behaviour, organizational skills and autonomy The fact my husband was unable to drive, but worked full-time, meant I spent a lot of time driving everyone to and from school and work. We had one rule in the house during these years... and it was co-operate. And it applied equally to all of us. Most of the time it worked well. Natural consequences occurred when it didn't work that way. For example, if my kids chose not to cooperate in the mornings, I had less time available to play in the afternoons. T.V. and computer time was a privilege in our household, not a right. I certainly didn't get to watch it if my jobs weren't done. I remember my Year 1 son being asked to get his home reader. But instead of being cooperative he dragged his heels. After fifteen minutes we were still having a power struggle. The next day I explained he had fifteen minutes before his favourite show came on the T.V. If he went and got his reader, and did his ten minutes of reading, he'd get to watch all of his show. But he chose not to cooperate. Plus I explained I wasn't being a good mother if I let him behave irresponsibly, and not learn to read. It was his responsibility, every day, to get his home reader and come to me ready to read. And he had to do it before the TV went on. The next afternoon I did the exact same thing, with the same time constraints, and he read within the time frame perfectly. Not only did he get to watch his show every afternoon as he wished, but by the end of the year he became one of the best readers in his class, winning the Academic Excellence Award. Reading became an absolute joy in his life because he used it to independently read whatever he wanted. And initially adhering to a regular routine made it possible. I explained his show was on and he was missing out. But he thought he'd try to negotiate his way out of his responsibility. He grizzled. 'It's too hard. It isn't fair.' And the time ticked on... After another five minutes of grizzling and whining, he saw I wasn't going to give in. I explained that he had to learn to read, and it was his responsibility. It was my job to help but I couldn't do it for him. My husband and I had learnt to read. His older brother had learnt to read. And he knew to read the level of books he wanted to, he needed to learn to read himself. • Spaghetti Fingers: A Laugh | best-parenting-advice.com: kids can be gross

back to top YOUR STORIES Spaghetti Fingers ... A Laugh My colleague Nathaniel was young, childless and handsome. I suppose I could best describe him as thin, neat and ambitious. But he made the mistake of calling in at my home, unannounced, around meal time to discuss how he could improve his chances of promotion. I was his assigned mentor so he assumed it was okay to do so. As usual he was impeccably dressed: pale blue linen jacket, white pressed T-shirt, designer denim jeans and Italian loafers. This guy had the lightest blue eyes I've ever seen. All the younger women on the staff were in love with him. He smelled of sandalwood and Old Spice. But unfortunately, when he arrived, I was already feeding my son. So he had no choice but to stay near me, if he wanted to chat. With the power of hindsight I should have been up front and said it wasn't a good time. But being a typical mum I thought I could handle it all. Big mistake. Now at the time I was allowing my eight month old to feed himself. About one mouthful in three of the spaghetti was actually making it into his mouth. Most ended up in his hair, his lap, on his chest. Some even made it up the wall. He continually reached out towards my 'clean' visitor trying to touch him with his spaghetti fingers. But Nathaniel wasn't having any part of it. His already large blue eyes were becoming wider and wider by the minute. He continually calculated the distance between himself and the mucky child... Basically his chances of getting out unscathed. He flinched every time my son's cast offs came even close. But when my son upended his bowl on his own head Nathaniel's eyes began to look hunted... Like they wanted to escape what they were being forced by circumstance, to see. To his credit, Nathaniel stayed focused talking about his goals (in a somewhat distracted fashion.) And I listened, adding comment where I thought appropriate. But then my son began to cough and splutter... And choke. If the guy thought it had been bad up until then, he was in for a horror show. My son's eyes bulged. His face reddened. Then he exploded. If you have a story you'd like to share about kids (from a child's, parent's or teacher's perspective) send it to the address below. After all, you never let the truth spoil a good story. Now because I'd been through this experience many times before, I was prepared. I leapt forward like a Ninja, and caught my son's 'geyser' in my hands, without spilling a drop. I rushed to the sink, tipped the vomit in, scrubbed my hands with the strongest-smelling hand wash I could find and returned with a beaming smile. But Nathaniel's eyes had bugged out of his head. He shut down. Mumbled something about needing to go. Grabbed his leather satchel and disappeared. I thought: 'It wasn't that bad. Really, was it? But to be fair, when even the animals disappear...
