From when my eldest son was born, like most other mothers, I talked to him. I made nonsense sounds using different mouth shapes. And I did one specific thing... I repeated the word 'Dad, dad, dad,' much more frequently than any other word. At the time, part of my 'tongue in cheek' reason for choosing those sounds was because I wanted my husband to hear him calling 'Dad, Dad, Dad,' in the middle of the night and get up to him, (which failed.) ​ But the real reason I chose 'Dad' was, it was easily recognizable for me and I wanted to find out how long it would take until I heard it back. ​ What age do you think my son was, when he said his first recognizable word? ​ Now if I hadn't been watching for that particular sound I likely would have missed it. But for me it was the sign that my three-and-a-half month old, wanted to communicate with me. And it changed how I related to him. ​ It encouraged me to talk with him more. And as a result, he was speaking by about fifteen months. I can recall, when he was twelve months old, standing on the lounge and looking out the window. He said 'Ball, sky, Mummy.' That being so I could understand exactly what he wanted. This specific information was like the light went on for him . ​ He went from pointing (and being frustrated when I didn't get it right,) to speaking in sentences within weeks. He learnt he got more of what he wanted, by talking. And as he talked, his behaviour became more rational. And because his needs were being met more quickly, he was happier. ​ 10 Simple Takes to Develop Early Language Sing to your baby, toddler, preschooler: chants, nursery rhymes & fun children's songs Carry babies around with you and talk to them Smile. Get in close and make repetitive noises Add a language layer to meal times Ask 'Where is the...' questions. They point Read simple board books from around 5-6 months of age Develop their vocabulary linked to things in their real world Include verbs and prepositions by using 'Peek a Boo' Books at around 9 months of age: Read at least one book every day to your child Speak to your children in age appropriate ways, remembering they're intelligent beings So what did we do to produce capable early communicators? ​ Anchor 2 Anchor 1 ​ ​ When I was pregnant I sometimes sang. And when my children were born I carried them around with me in a pouch and chatted with them as I did things. In hindsight, as babies, they would have been exposed to many thousands of words a day just by their proximity to me, as I conversed with others. WHY? This helped them to hear the intonation in my voice, and the pauses that indicate I've finished a thought. They heard familiar words that they began to recognize. And equally important, because they were close to me, they learnt language made them feel safe. When we changed their nappies we got in close and smiled, made repetitive nonsense sounds encouraging them to speak back. ​ I waggled my tongue, made repetitive noises like bubbubbub sounds. I blew raspberries. I said 'mamama.' And I smiled. ​ WHY? They were seeing my face close to theirs and I was showing them how to produce sound. e.g.: How to blow air through my lips ... which is a precursor to the plosive sounds of 'p' and 'b'. Try making a 'p' sound yourself. Feel the air expelled. Again at around five to six months of age (when they were sitting in a high chair to eat) we added a language layer to it. For example: We had small animal figures which visited only during mealtimes. We would ask 'What does the puppy dog say?' And my son would attempt to say 'Bowowow.' Then we'd say 'What does the pussy cat say?' And again he would attempt to say 'Neow.' Not only was he learning animal names he was producing intentional sound. ​WHY? My goal was to build on our children's ability to produce intentional varied sounds, all of which are precursors to speech. ​ We read simple board books to them from when my children were around four or five months old. I focused on vocabulary building pointing and naming things. At around six months for example, we asked questions like: 'Where's the pussy cat?' 'Where's the cow... dog... etc?' and they had to identify the appropriate animal from the group by pointing. As they became more capable we chose more complex animals and a wider variety of animals to choose from. WHY? My goal was simply to build their vocabulary, because once they knew what things were, it was easier to build concepts around these things later. For example: Building on: The cat is under the bed. The shoe is on the chair. ​​​ ​ From around nine months on we began to introduce reveal books or peek-a-boo books like the 'Spot ' series. Our children learnt the books off by heart and would indicate which animals were waiting under the bed, or inside the toy box, etc by making the sound the animal made. But as their language improved they made rudimentary attempts at saying the name of the animal, all of which I encouraged. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ If your child has some prereading skills prior to school, learning to read would be easier for them. For some very sobering reading, The Early Catastrophe: The Thirty Million Word Gap is very thought provoking. ​ This study identified there can be a thirty million word gap between children from high, and low socio-economic backgrounds, by the age of three. About the Author Even with all the child-raising knowledge I had acquired as an early childhood teacher, over years, I doubted my ability to get through everything I had to do, every day, as a mum... I have two sons who achieved their own goals. One is a specialist doctor who graduated with Distinction and now works in a spinal unit. The other a senior engineer (who received multiple merit-based scholarships/ cadetships while training,) and now works mentoring other engineers. Our children are living proof that the strategies we used, worked for a busy, full-time working couple. And sometimes life didn't make it easy... My husband had a life-changing accident when my kids were young, that left him deemed legally blind. And just like many of you may be going through now, we had a huge mortgage, massive medical bills and little money (because it initially knocked me out of the workforce to care for him.) The strategies I devised then, enabled me to work full-time, him to work full-time (after being redeployed) and freed up time, and money, so we could still have a quality life. ​Recalling when my children were growing up, other parents sometimes commented that I "must spend lots of time helping my kids at home," because they'd observed my kids were both clever, and motivated. But I know I didn’t spend more time teaching my kids, than other supportive parents did. ​ But I did do something a little differently. I provided a fun learning environment from birth. I'd seen how very important early childhood is to wiring the brain for all future learning. And it is because I've seen first hand how quality early learning experiences scaffold life success I've written this website. Receiving an Outstanding National Achievement Award at Parliament House Canberra from Minister for Education. No one tells you when you become a parent you're going fail. And that you're going to keep on failing, (with an audience,) for the rest of your life. ​ But, over time you'll work out failure is ok. In fact, failure is good because it means you're still trying to get it right. Failure means you're refining your parenting skills. That you've got one less mistake to make in the future. Every day you learn something, you're getting better. Therefore. I encourage you to learn from those who know more than you. Find a mentor. Seek out credible advice. Let the village help raise your child. Because if you do, you'll be happier and your kids will be happier and more successful. ​ ​Why These Resources are Free I know what it's like to overcome multiple hardships. I selfishly want to live in a society where people feel successful. Because those who feel successful are less likely to erode our society from within. E.g. our drug pushers, thieves, thugs, bullies, etc. As parents we have huge societal pressures to work, (often full-time,) provide healthy meals for our families, maintain mortgage and other payments, achieve some career success, plus... have rocking bodies, be ageless, live in a beautiful home, have a partner to die for; and somehow also have time for exotic fun-filled holidays and an exciting social life. Little wonder we can feel inferior to the stunning social influencer with her perfect family, who appears to have it all happening. I can assure you, after years of working with thousands of families, it's all smoke and mirrors. But on an even more fundamental level, it can also be hard to have very little money and live in fear of what will happen next. back to top EASY HEALTHY RECIPES QUICK & EASY CHICKEN DINNERS Chicken Fillet Stir Fry with Udon Noodles Ingredients 8 chicken thigh fillets 1 onion cut into wedges ½ tablespoon Olive Oil 1 teaspoon minced garlic 1 teaspoon ginger ½ cup soy sauce 2 tablespoons honey 1 packet Udon noodles 2 carrots 1 handful beans 1 floret broccoli 1/3 cauliflower 2 bok choy (optional) 1 kettle boiling water Method 1. Mix garlic, ginger and soy sauce together 2. Put chicken fillets under grill and pour ½ soy sauce mixture over the top of chicken 3. Cook chicken on one side and turn 4. Pour remaining soy sauce over chicken and cook for two minutes on high 5. Drizzle honey over the top of chicken and cook for another two minutes ensuring that honey doesn’t burn 6. Heat olive oil in wok and add onion. Fry until onion is transparent 7. Dice all vegetables into small pieces and add to onion. Cook for 2 minutes. Add 1/3 kettle boiling water 8. Meanwhile cook Udon noodles in 2/3 boiling water on high in microwave for 4 minutes. Drain 9. Add Udon Noodles to vegetables making sure that they don’t stick to wok 10. Remove chicken fillets from grill and slice them crosswise thinly 11. Put on top of vegetables in wok and stir through. Add bok choy. 11. back to top EASY HEALTHY RECIPES EASY HEALTHY PORK RECIPES Renae's Slow Cooker Pork ​ Ingredients 1 pork butt 2 onions 8 cloves 2 cloves garlic 4 green apples ¼ cup maple syrup ​ Method 1.Insert 8 cloves into top of pork 2. Insert 2 bulbs of garlic into slits into pork 3. Place half of the onions in the slow cooker, place pork butt on the top and add additional onions on top 4. Cook in slow cooker for twelve hours 5. Remove from slow cooker and place in baking dish 6. Slice 4 green apples and place over the top of cooked pork 7.
